I will use “Silent Springs” , the title of a book by Rachel Carson as a euphemism for the necrophilia of patriarchy.
Patriarchy means “rule of the father” and broadly speaking describes a country or society where decisions and laws are made exclusively or predominantly by men, where major financial and political institutions are in the hands of men, and where the media reflects the male world-view and ignores the female world-view. In other words, every country to one degree or another.
Men plunder women and rape the environment, rape women and plunder the environment.
The need to destroy is the truth of male rule.
Never leaving a stone unturned when it comes to oppressing the female sex, the oppressors continue to demonstrate their hatred. In India, society is so female-hating that female foetus’s are regularly aborted. In one country alone there will soon be 20% less females than men, 20% less than there would have been.
New technology is being deployed in the race to eliminate females.Patriarchies are now hell bent on militantly killing women off, before they are even born. Male technology- ultrasound scanning- is being used both East and West for the sake of heinous eugenics, with the added bonus of controlling pregnant women by instilling fear. Fear of what? Of a faulty foetus? Of a “problem” that cannot be cured in utero, only named.
The truth: the reason they look into the womb is because they can, as Greer pointed out.
And because they’re jealous of women’s unique ability to create life.
Rather than concede that women’s bodies are creative geniuses, they search for faults, for endless proof that mothers cannot create perfection. And in the eyes of patriarchy, they cannot. In this crazy world made by men, eugenics rule. But to a mother, her child is always perfect. The doctors of death cannot improve on her creation. The man-made chemicals that pollute her body, manfacturing the physical distortion of her babies, will never destroy a mother’s love for her child.
Female infanticide is not a new trick; killing girl babies is as old as many cultures. “For the three days of her second child’s short life, Lakshmi admits, she refused to nurse her. To silence the infant’s famished cries, the impoverished village woman squeezed the milky sap from an oleander shrub, mixed it with castor oil, and forced the poisonous potion down the newborn’s throat. The baby bled from the nose, then died soon afterward.”
As in the case of Chinese foot-binding, patriarchies call upon women to carry out the dirty deeds required of their woman-hating culture. When women have no economic or political power, and no means of survival other than through marriage or prostitution, they are driven to committing the horrors that the ruling class requires of them. Horror shows of women forced to kill their girl babies, or bind their little girls’ feet, are a direct consequence of the patriarchal power structure. Women’s suffering exists at the mere whim of the other half of humanity. The suffering could be stopped, but men prefer that it continue.
But ‘Silent Springs’ is a concept that extends much further than female death.
Global patriarchy’s love of death includes not only the death of women, but of the entire natural world. The war on women, the loathing and wanton destruction of women’s life, by men, has always existed, in every country and culture. It has never been a secret. But what does seems to have been kept a secret is patriarchal male loathing of all life.
My Silent Springs folder will catalogue this loathing.
